Take Care of Your Heart

Taking care of your heart is serious, and I’m not just talking about romance! My Dad recently had a quadruple bypass and it was absolutely frightening! Seeing him in ICU with tubes coming out everywhere, restrained to the bed, and on a ventilator took me to another place emotionally, that I had never been to. I was not ready to loose my Dad. The surgery went great, but his lungs waking up from anesthesia did not! That’s when the fear set in. We kept wondering when he was going to come off life support, and if he could. I remember my Mom calling me to tell me, “In 15 minutes they are going to pull his ventilation tube and if Dad doesn’t start breathing they will re-intubate”. I recall the feeling of my world melting around me and feeling so out of control of the situation. Needless to say his lungs began breathing, and his brutal road to recovery started. One thing I brought home with me from the hospital, was how do I keep this from happening to me?! Heart health isn’t the greatest in my family, so I knew I needed to be proactive about it. I did ask my Dad’s cardiologist how to prevent this surgery from becoming my reality. He told me not to smoke, exercise, and to eat healthy. Sounds easy, but for some it’s hard. Try your best to make these 3 things a priority within your lifestyle, because in the end it will pay off! Read this quick article on your resting heart beat to see if its high. If it is get it checked out. Love yourself enough to take care of your heart.
